Many professional mixers start by balancing with faders only, without any EQ or compression, to establish the fundamental relationships between elements. This forces you to make decisions about what’s important in the mix and ensures you’re not using processing as a crutch for poor balance.

EQ: Sculpting Your Frequency Spectrum

Equalization (EQ) is one of the most fundamental and powerful mixing tools. If something sounds too thin, instead of boosting the lows, try cutting the highs. Subtractive EQ tends to sound more natural and uses less processing power than additive EQ.

Compression is a dynamic processor that reduces the volume of loud signals and/or amplifies quiet signals, resulting in a more consistent level. Compression is essential in modern music production—it’s used to control dynamic performances, add punch and energy, glue elements together, and achieve the loud, polished sound of commercial recordings.

Logic Pro X includes several excellent compressors, with the Compressor plug-in being the most versatile. The key parameters of compression are: Threshold (the level above which compression begins), Ratio (how much compression is applied—2:1 is gentle, 10:1 is aggressive), Attack (how quickly compression engages), Release (how quickly compression disengages), and Makeup Gain (to compensate for the volume reduction caused by compression).
